How to Tighten Toilet Paper Holder Without Screws

Over time, toilet-paper holders that are installed with screws and plastic anchors can come loose from the wall, according to Bob Vila. While this type of attachment may work in bathrooms with tile walls, it's not reliable with drywall or plaster. Replacing the existing anchors with small toggle bolts provides a secure attachment without making more holes in the wall. A do-it-yourself homeowner can do the job with basic tools.

  1. Remove the Roller

  2. Remove the paper and roller from the arms of the holder.

  3. Remove the Assembly

  4. Loosen the small sets crews at the rim of each trim cover and arm assembly with the appropriate Allen key or a jeweler's screwdriver. Pull off the assemblies to expose the mounting plates for each assembly. Sometimes the screws are on the bottom of the assembly and you may have to get down on your knees to see them, according to PH & G.

  5. Remove the Mounting Plate

  6. Loosen and remove the screws that secure each mounting plate at the wall with a standard screwdriver and pull off the brackets. For standard holders with arms that attach to the wall with screws, loosen and remove the screws that secure each arm at the wall with a screwdriver.

  7. Thread the Screws Into the Wall Anchors

  8. Thread one of the removed screws into each wall anchor in the wall one at a time and pull out the anchors using the screw as a handle. If an anchor is still attached at a screw, unscrew and remove it, and pull the screw out of the mounting plate or arm. Discard the screws and the anchors.

  9. Drill a Hole

  10. Install a 3/8-inch drill in a cordless drill. Drill a 3/8-inch hole at each hole where a wall anchor was removed.

  11. Install the Toggle Bolts

  12. Install 2 1/2-inch toggle bolts at each mounting plate or each arm where screws were used. To do this, unscrew and remove the spring-loaded wing nuts from each bolt and insert the ends of the bolts through the face of the plate or the arms. Screw the wing nuts onto the ends of each bolt.

  13. Compress the Wing Nuts

  14. Compress the spring-loaded wing nuts against the threaded stems of each bolt, one at a time, and insert the nuts into the drilled holes at the wall.

  15. Reattach the Mounting Plates

  16. Fit each mounting plate or arm against the face of the wall one at a time, and push on the head of each bolt to spring open the wing nuts behind the drywall or plaster.

  17. Ensure a Secure Connection

  18. Pull outward on the plate or arm until the wing nuts catch behind the wall. Hold outward pressure on the plate or arm with one hand and tighten the toggle bolts in equal increments to attach the plate or arm securely. Repeat the procedure to secure the remaining mounting plate or arm at the wall.

  19. Reattach the Cover and Arm Assembly

  20. Fit each trim cover and arm assembly onto a mounting bracket and align the holes for the roller horizontally. Tighten the sets crews at the rim of each assembly. Reinstall the roller and paper at the arms of the holder.

  21. Things You Will Need

    • Allen key or jeweler's screwdriver

    • Standard screwdriver

    • 3/8-inch drill bit

    • 2 1/2-inch toggle bolts
